Mass shooting at Fort Hood leaves nothing but questions

I think like most people today, my heart sunk when I heard about the shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. I was keeping tabs via a few Twitter accounts and kept reading about more fatalities and so many people that were just at a loss for words. Even as a non-religious person, I found myself saying a prayer and hoping it would make a difference.

13 people, including one of the shooters, are dead. And it makes it worse to know that it was a military man that took his rage out on others in the military. As someone with a degree in psychology and sociology, it’s incredibly strange to hear the shooter, Nidal Malik Hasan, was an Army psychiatrist. It’s a disconnect I cannot understand. Maybe the people helping others are the ones that need the help the most, I don’t know. Maybe we’ll never know.

I know the internet is filled with blogs over this and I don’t know if anyone will read these words, but I still felt compelled.

Kids on social networking sites- are they too young?

When you sign up for any social networking site (Twitter, Facebook, Myspace), you have to check that you’re over the age of 13. But the only thing keeping kids from these sites is just a little checkmark…and we all know that kids aren’t always honest. And there is literally no way to enforce the age rule.

What can 11 year olds possibly be sharing on social networking sites? While many are probably very innocent, we have all heard the horror stories that can arise.

But are these sites any worse than what kids can do with their phones now? I didn’t have a cell phone until my senior year of high school and it didn’t even have texting (oh, the horrors!)…so is the age 13 limit just an unecessary, arbitrary precaution?

I’m split. I have nieces on these sites and it scares me, but I also trust them. But I worry about my younger niece, who is slowly getting to “that age” where these sites are important. I think maybe kids should be allowed, but with limitations.

Facebook introduces “live feed”

Written on October 25th, 2009 by Johnno shouts

Once again, Facebook and Twitter have fed off each other. Facebook has now introduced a “live feed” (just like the one Twitter has) for the the recap of moments you missed while doing pesky things like sleeping, school or work.

live feed

Unlike the last Facebook update, most people seem okay with this change. And Facebook reported no drop in usage…though I wonder if there will be “I hate live feed!” groups that will form.

Kanye West = Not dead

Just like every other celebrity death rumor, this one is a hoax too. Somehow the hoax of West being involved in a car accident last night spread like wildfire, mostly thanks to Twitter. As of this morning, ‘RIP Kanye West’ was the #1 trending topic on Twitter.

And, interestingly enough, most of the comments weren’t sad. Guess everyone isn’t forgetting that VMA stunt any time soon.

How private are your tweets?

If you’re one of the few people that keeps their Twitter updates private, you might rethink before you tweet anything sensitive. A loophole has been discovered to read private tweets. And all you have to do is Google. Search for twitter.com/username (and replace username with whoever you’re looking for)…and voila. “Privacy”.

So keep the secrets off Twitter for awhile, unless you want any snoop to know what you’ve been up to.
